the story behind sweat on the ship
More Than a Workout. A Movement Built on Connection.
Sweat on the Ship began in Charleston in 2024 with a simple belief: movement has the power to bring people together.
Founded during Mental Health Awareness Month on the flight deck of the historic USS Yorktown, the original event was created to start a bigger conversation around mental fitness—using movement as the common ground. Keeping community over competition at the forefront. What began as one evening centered around fitness, connection, and community quickly became something much bigger.
From the beginning, our mission has been simple: move together, connect intentionally, and create a community where everyone feels like they belong.
We believe mental fitness isn't limited to what happens inside a therapist's office or during life's hardest moments. It's also found in movement, friendship, conversation, laughter, showing up for one another, and having places where people can genuinely connect.
From One Event to a Growing Community
Sweat on the Ship started as an annual event, bringing hundreds of people together alongside local fitness professionals, wellness brands, small businesses, and community organizations.
But we didn't want that feeling to happen just once a year.
What began on the flight deck has grown into monthly collaborative experiences, partnering with studios, instructors, brands, and venues throughout Charleston. From workouts on the Yorktown to pop-ups across the city, each event introduces our community to new ways to move, new people to meet, and new businesses to support.
These smaller experiences have allowed us to take the heart of our annual event and build community around it all year long.
Where We're Going
Charleston will always be where Sweat on the Ship began—but we're building with a much bigger vision.
As we continue to grow our annual flagship event and year-round collaborations, we're creating a model that can travel: bringing together movement, mental wellness, local businesses, national partners, and the personality of each community we enter.
Our next chapter includes expanding Sweat on the Ship into a second city, creating opportunities for multi-market partnerships, and continuing to build experiences that make wellness feel less intimidating and community feel more accessible.
Because ultimately, this was never just about working out on a ship.
It's about what happens when people choose to show up—for themselves, for each other, and for something bigger.
And we're just getting started.
